De-Googling yourself

Anyone else trying to, at least in some ways, stop relying so much on Google and other bigger cloud services?

I’ve had a Nextcloud instance on the server I set up on my old computer here at home, and I’m getting tons of use out of it for project management and collaboration since a friend and I are starting a studio for scientific/medical art, with a focus on 3D, and we’re using it for rudimentary version control and file sharing. I’ve got a Docker image for a Jitsi instance there too (since Nextcloud’s built in video conferencing is ass) that I spin up when I need it, and just the other day I set up Mail-In-A-Box on a $5/month Linode server that seems to work great. Definitely gonna finally abandon the horror that is my old private mail server that I bashed together by hand, because fuck doing stuff like adding additional accounts when you’re running Postfix/Dovecot/PostgreSQL on bare metal instead of having stuff dockerised AS GOD INTENDED.

I’m really tempted to try and de-google my old phone with something like /e/ and microG now that I’m getting a new one, too, sort of as a stepping stone to doing it on my new one later. 😀

yes!

there is a fairly decent but basic lineageOS build for my phone but so far it doesn’t have signature spoofing, which is necessary for microG. i have thought about setting up a build myself but i have never. done that lol. maybe it’s worth a shot, tbh the ppl on xda don’t seem to know what they’re doing.

i am also running nextcloud, using it for everything now lol, calendar, contacts, bookmarks, photos, fuckin. everything lol. de-googled THAT.

and obviously i am running nopasaran.gq, which not everyone knows also hosts jitsi.nopasaran.gq lol

Ah yeah, I looked around and signature spoofing doesn’t seem to be an issue with my OnePlus 3T which is nice. Seems like it’s old enough that it’s available with most builds.

Honestly getting into sort of sysadmin-y stuff is such a fun hobby, it feels a bit like digital gardening, haha. Like, with Mail-In-A-Box, it’s got automated local encrypted backups by default and you can just copy those to somewhere else by hand, or you can set up something on S3 to make it backup there, but I wanted to automate backups to my home server, so I looked up the rsync backup option for MIAB and how all of that is configured. Then since I wanted local backups but didn’t want to give the user saving the backups unnecessary permissions on my server just in case, but my backups folder is in a subfolder on my BTRFS RAID HDD setup that it has write permissions for but not for the parent folders, I ended up bind mounting that backup folder to another point where those intermediate folders weren’t an issue.

yeh i need to get some kind of local NAS set up bc my nextcloud is hosted on my seedbox, which is huge (8 tb! a gigabit NIC!) but it’s also RAID 0 and well, last week that resulted in everything going poof lmao. i have most of it mirrored between phones and my laptop but. yeah. shit is so much more fun. and then you can bring friends along too lol like i can make accounts for people on my nextcloud! or my seedbox in general tbh!

Yeah! So far I just have three 500GB disks I had laying around on my server (it’s an old i7 3770k on a mini-ITX mobo) set up in btrfs raid56 giving me roughly 1TB of storage which works great for my purposes so far (and it’s set up with an UPS to make sure no raid56 glitches ruin anything lol), but I have a 5TB external drive hooked up to my desktop as well and would kinda like to replace the 500GB disks with ones of similar size to that in the future! Then I might set up something like plex too tbh

LMAO yeah, I feel you. I’m really tempted to turn one of my old laptops into a server as well.
